Great interview Nelson. I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Malone many years ago and he was absolutely delightful. I was in college at the time and NYU was having a soap opera symposium and Michael Malone as well as Linda Gottlieb were in attendance. He was very well spoken and very interested in hearing our thoughts. It would definitely be a coup for any soap to have him back.

Malone would have been perfect as head writer on Y&R.

With a strong EP dedicated to telling character driven stories, hell yeah!

I've always liked Malone and even was ok with most of his second OLTL stint. I think he also got screwed at AW too.

I totally agree with his thoughts on soaps and OLTL. I think he was being fair about Todd/Marty. I've been hard on that story but he is right. It all depends on where Ron goes with it. I hate it right now and it's dragged on immensely but maybe the payoff will end up making it worth it so I will wait until we reach the climax before judging it further. I hope it works out well because this story will likely make or break Ron for me, personally.

I wish he would return to soaps. I would say he may be good at Days but with Corday there, I don't think anyone would be at this point. I do wish he would return to any soap though. He seems to have a firm grasp on things.

OLTL is a joke right now - Rex in surgery then his spirit or whatever is out of his body and then he's on a game show fighting for his son. WTF?!

LOL! You see, that was Passions not OLTL. Isn't OLTL a traditional soap? I didn't expect to see this stuff at all. If OLTL continues this, the Emmys will tell them to fuck off like they did to Passions.(By not giving them shit.)

That is the train Ron has leaped on now.

I personally thought it was funny in a way but also didn't fit on OLTL. It just feels like OLTL is veering further and further into Passions/JER territory. That is of bigger concern to me. The Todd/Marty story, where written with depth, reminds me a bit of the junk JER came up with on Passions in it's final years. he just wanted people talking. He wanted controversy he kept coming up with shock and awe stories. Granted, Todd/Marty has loads of history behind it but given the pace it's moving and the nature of it thus far, it feels like something from Passions 2005-2007. Then you add in Mendorra, Andrea Evans basically playing Rebecca in Llainview (less so now but you get the picture), the time travel story which dragged forever, this secret room plot, all these returns and cameos (JER tended to do this too and it always came off as trying to appease fans and cover up some bad story), and now this Rex game show junk...I just feel like the real Ron left the show in early June and JER stepped up in his place. Or maybe this is the real Ron. Who knows. All I know is I want the quality the show had in May and June of this year and in the second half of last year. I see some of that in this Langston/Dorian story and even a bit in the Starr/Marcie stuff but the rest of the show is just one big campy mess IMO.

This is actually starting to remind me of Days in 1993. JER started out so well with good, character-driven stories (just like Ron) and then he verged further and further into camp to the point where many long-time viewers were alienated and some new ones fell in love with it because they liked the camp and like the fact that the show was using history (even if it was covering up some things), which led to the fan division we see today with Days. I hope that isn't the case but it just has many similarities IMO.

I didn't watch in the 80's but from what I read OLTL was quite campy.

It was but many shows were. Days was too. However, the camp was grounded and you weren't handed too much to handle at once. You totally bought into it and actually believed these things could happen.

The problem with OLTL is it's too much camp at once. It's been non-stop for the most part since late June. You went from gripping, character stuff to time travel, Mendorra, a secret room plot, and now you have this game show thing that really serves no purpose but it's being portrayed like it does. It's just a fantasy with possible hints of story and while those are fun, it took away so much of the drama from the current story Rex is involved in. I just think you have to be careful when you do stuff like that. I feel like the Rex dream is something you do when it doesn't detract from story and that is not what happened. It just feels like something tossed in for kicks and with little regard for story.

It's not any weirder than that the episode(s) during Tomlin's time as EP when everyone in Llanview switched identities - and that episode was praised to high heaven, if I recall correctly.

It was a stand-alone episode and characterized as such. That is what I mean when I say pick and choose the right time to do something like that. Just like Days did it's film noir stuff this year. It isolated it from story so it didn't detract from it.

It in no way detracted from any story because it was isolated from story. Tomlin's OLTL was campy but not like this. He gave you only a little to deal with at a time. It's been pretty much all campy, all the time since late June for OLTL with the exception of the Langston story, Starr's pregnancy, and Todd/Marty.

Thanks for the info, Phoenix. You are so right! Atleast JER's stuff was entertaining.

I have to disagree that the '80's stuff was any better than what we've seen recently. We had the time travel story, the awful and asinine Eterna bit and the Heaven sequence. I was disgusted with it after following the show since the early '70's. The time travel stuff we just had was as well written and acted as the Old West storyline in '88 IMO! Catherine Hickland as Olympia alone made it worth watching and I DESPISE sci-fi stories on my soaps. I'll take the secret room over Eterna any day. Having said that, I'm not enjoying the game show stuff at all and I really hope we get back to more traditional storytelling and less fantasy BS!

GREAT interview, Nelson. It's a shame that Michael Malone isn't writing a soap these days.

LOL

I still wuv you Rake. ;)

OLTL was really hitting all cylinders a few months ago, but then they began all this campy stuff. It's fine in limited dose, but it's taken over the show.

I still think Andrea Evans is being wasted. I keep expecting Gwen to come through the Buchanan mansion talking about how much she hates Theresa. She may as well still be playing Rebecca.

I only like Langston and Dorian's story.

Aw, I love you too. :)

ITA with you!

We're seeing real drama with the Dorian stuff.

IMO, Susan Haskell is being wasted even more than Andrea Evans. She's been back for almost 4 months now, and she's STILL in that damn bedroom in those damn frumpy clothes.

And I want some Dorian/Tina interaction, damn it!
